1. What does it cost to get Internet into a café?
It depends on what provider you go with and what bandwidth you need.

2. Which provider should I go with?
See who can give you a reliable connection at your premises and good customer service. You don’t want to go and spend thousands of dollars on a broadband Internet set-up to find that it was the wrong solution for your location.
SpaceNet takes customer care very seriously. Firstly we will always do adequate research on your location to ensure you are given the right solution. Secondly our customer care managers can be reached 24 hours. Our attitude is if you have a problem, we have a problem.

3. What bandwidth should I subscribe for?
Ultimately the more you can afford the better. However there is a guideline for the number of computers you should place on what type of Managed link. You can operate more machines than specified but to maintain a good level of speed you should try and stick to the following guidelines:
  Quarterly Yearly
16k 3
32k 6
64k 13
96k 20
128k 30
256k 65
SpaceNet can upgrade your service very quickly if you think you need more bandwidth. So don’t worry if you have subscribed for the wrong service.

4. What is managed bandwidth and what is dedicated bandwidth?
Dedicated Bandwidth:
This is bandwidth that is from your network direct to the Internet Backbone. This is very expensive, as by definition, it is dedicated to you and not allowed to be used by anyone else.
Managed Bandwidth:
This is bandwidth that you get to the Internet Service Provider where it is managed (shared) with other users. The actual bandwidth you will get at any one time depends on the number of concurrent users on the network of the ISP in relation to the total bandwidth that the ISP has.

SpaceNet can offer you dedicated and managed bandwidth at the best rates in Kampala.

5. Should I be taking dedicated or managed bandwidth?
Dedicated bandwidth is very expensive and is not recommended to anyone unless they require it for particular applications that use up a lot of bandwidth and will not function without it. You are better off getting a larger bandwidth but on the managed service. As long as your ISP’s managing policy is fair you will be better off as you will be able to afford a bigger link at a cheaper price.
SpaceNet gives you a burstable rate of 50% on your managed service. This means when bandwidth is available you can get 50% more bandwidth than you are subscribing for. They also have the fairest sharing ratio in the market and that is why so many heavy users such as cafés are coming to SpaceNet.

6. What type of connection should I use? Should I use a wireless, leased line or anything else?
Wireless is a very good medium for receiving your Internet Link. However it is prone to interference from other wireless users. It should only be used in conditions where you have clear line of sight to the ISP’s repeater station and without going over congested areas.
Leased lines are great because they are usually in the ground and so are not prone to interference. However, they are expensive and involve an additional monthly cost.
A local area connection is best. If an ISP is able to offer you a LAN connection in the building that you are in, it means that all issues of type of connectivity and quality have already been taken care of as the ISP has put Internet into the building and all you have to do is decide what bandwidth you want.
SpaceNet offers wireless through 4 repeater stations all over Kampala. It installs both UTL and MTN leased lines. And it has over 20 LAN’s, mostly on Fibre Optic technology. Fibre optic connections are the best available in the market with unrivalled performance. This number is growing every day.
